내성적인 고교생 마크(Mark Hunter: 크리스찬 슬레이터 분). 아버지는 고향 뉴욕의 친구들을 그리워하는 마크에게 그들과 교신하라며 아마추어 무선통신기를 사준다. 마크의 유일한 친구가 된 무신통신기, 낮에는 말 한마디 않던 그가 밤만 되면 교신기의 마이크를 잡고 발칸포처럼 말을 쏟아낸다. 누가 듣고 있으리라고는 꿈에도 생각치 못한 채. 그러던 어느날, 라디오 FM채녈을 통해 수신된 자신의 목소리를 학생들이 녹음해 즐긴다는 사실을 알게 된 마크, 그는 이제 밤 10시만 되면 젊은 청취자들을 사로잡는 정체불명의 DJ하드 해리가 되어 기상천외의 해적 방송을 시작한다.

Mark Hunter is an intelligent but shy teenager who has just moved to suburban Arizona from New York. Unbeknownst to his parents and peers, at 10pm each school night Mark takes to the shortwave radio in his basement and transforms into pirate DJ "Hard Harry". Mark's show, at once thoughtful and profane, becomes an underground hit with students at his high school, inspiring the wrath of his principal and the Federal Communications Commission.
