윌은 두명의 남동생이 있는 목장주이며 미망인 어머니 한나와 함께 살고 있습니다.
어머니 한나는 세인트루이스로 이사를 가고 둘째 아들을 데리고 가고 싶어하지만 뜻을 이루지 못하고 결국 아프게 되어 죽음에 이르게 됩니다.
한편, 윌은 지역에서 가장 큰 농장을 운영하고 이웃인 오드리를 흠모합니다.
그러던 중 막내동생(Hade)이 도둑들에게 총살을 당하여 죽게 되며 장례 후 오드리와 미래를 약속하며 마을을 떠나게 됩니다.
