제2차 세계대전이 한창이던 1941년, 동유럽의 대부분을 점령한 독일은 러시아 침공을 계획하고 '레닌그라드'로 진격한다. 이 소식이 전해지자 '레닌그라드'에 상주해 있던 수많은 각국 기자들이 본국으로 돌아가지만 미국 출신의 여기자 '케이트'는 이 가운데 실종되어 본국으로 돌아가지 못한 채 '레닌그라드'에 홀로 남게 된다. 추위와 배고픔 속에 '레닌그라드'를 탈출하려던 그녀는 러시아의 여성 경찰 '니나'를 운명처럼 만나게 되고 두 사람은 서로를 의지해 지옥 같은 전장에서 탈출을 시도하는데…

Foreign journalists are evacuated but one of them, Kate Davies, is presumed dead and misses the plane. Alone in the city she is helped by Nina Tsvetnova a young and idealist police officer and together they will fight for their own survival and the survival of the people in the besieged Leningrad.
